Christella Jean-Pierre began living at SSF in 2022 and quickly stepped into leadership as House Manager at the Grace Fox Scholarship House. “SSF was the perfect balance of heart, hand, and mind,” she shares. The community, routines, and responsibility sharpened her professionalism and social skills while connecting her studies in social work and public administration to real life.
Her path to graduation was anything but simple. As a former foster youth at risk of homelessness, Christella faced barriers that could have derailed her education. SSF’s housing scholarship provided stability, food, shelter, and a network that allowed her to focus on school and grow as a leader. “My experience at SSF showed me what’s possible when systems support vulnerable people,” she says. That belief now fuels her career.
Today, Christella serves as a Strategic Innovation Consultant for the City of Tallahassee, supporting the City Manager and Assistant City Managers with process improvements that make public services more efficient and responsive. She also partners with the Florida Institute for Child Welfare, helping build an ethical, programmatic approach to include the voices of people with lived experience in dependency systems, so policy and practice improve for families who need it most.
Giving back is at the core of her story. She volunteered as a House Manager to strengthen daily operations and to say thank you for the opportunities SSF made possible. Looking ahead, Christella is honing her skills as an early-career professional with a clear aim: advance resilience for vulnerable populations at the systems level.
Fun fact: Now that grad school is done, you can often find Christella at a live jam session, playing keys and refueling in community.
Christella’s journey from SSF resident to dual-master’s public servant reminds us why stable housing, leadership opportunities, and a supportive living and learning community matter. She’s proof that when systems work for people, people can change systems.
