Resident: Elisha Corlew
House: Smith-Tyner
Hi! I’m Elisha Corlew and I live in the Smith-Tyner house at the top of the hill. I am a senior and have been at the Southern Scholarship Foundation since my first semester! I was born in Winter Haven, FL (located right between Orlando and Tampa) and have grown up there my whole life. I was homeschooled along with my three siblings by my mother all the way up until my junior year. I chose to go to Florida State because my two older siblings had gone there and I loved it whenever I visited. Now, my little sister is up here too (say hi to Hannah in the Polk house!!) and graduates in the spring, so being a Seminole definitely runs in the family.
I am an actuarial science major which I am sure sounds completely foreign to 95% of the population, but basically I study mathematics and insurance. More specifically, I want to be an actuary and actuaries usually work in insurance firms. Their job is to look at past statistics of their consumers and determine a rate that is appropriate to charge for their insurance premiums. They also use this historical data to prevent future risks from happening. One description people use when it comes to actuaries is that their job is to predict the future by studying the past. I absolutely love my major and if you have any questions about it, feel free to reach out to me!
Some of my hobbies outside of school include performing, watching movies, and listening to music. I have been performing for the past eight years in musicals and plays at local community theatres. I love to sing, act, dance, and help backstage with shows, but I also enjoy going out and watching musicals! I love the school of theatre at FSU, but my absolute favorite place on campus is the Student Life Cinema. I have always had a passion for films and enjoy all kinds of movies! Some of my favorite movies are The Social Network, Mulholland Drive, and A Separation. The SLC gives so many opportunities to students to go see classic films as well as new blockbusters and I spend most of my time there. When I am not seeing a musical or movie, though, I am probably at home listening to music. A few of my favorite artists are Arcade Fire, Lana Del Rey, and Tame Impala.
SSF has been one of my favorite parts of my college years and I am so thankful for all the friends I have made throughout my time here. I have made lifelong friends here and have learned so much about community living. I graduate in December so this is my last semester at FSU and SSF, so I’m excited for my future but sad to be leaving this great group of people. My advice to new SSFers is to take advantage of all the opportunities that you will get here and go to as many socials as possible!
